Be sure to add a trip to Alcatraz, once the site of a former maximum-security penitentiary and now one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions. A short ferry ride from Pier 33 at Fisherman’s Wharf, you will have the opportunity to talk with National Park Service Rangers about the island’s history, watch a short slide show and take a 1-hour audio walking tour of the cellblock. Total estimated time is 2-3 hours for Alcatraz Tour. Learn the incredible history of the island and about its most infamous inmates such as the “Birdman” Robert Stroud or Al “Scarface” Capone. The legendary “Rock” features some of the most spectacular photo opportunities.
It is advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and a jacket for the Alcatraz trip. Alcatraz Cruises provides the Alcatraz ferry service to and from the island.
